Blackwater Jail, located in north-east England, was an underground prison located beneath the River Tees. The prison consisted of several dungeons, cells and tunnels located deep beneath the river bed and was used to house convicted criminals and political prisoners from the late 16th century until its closure in 1777. The exact origin of Blackwater Jail is unknown but stories of its existence have been documented in both historical accounts and folklore for centuries. Inhabitants of the jail were subject to living in uncomfortably cramped conditions, and their only access to fresh air and light was through a small hole in the roof of the cell that provided a minimal amount of air and natural light. The prisoners of Blackwater Jail were subject to harsh punishments such as starvation, physical torture and mental abuse. Furthermore, they were required to wear iron collars and shackles, and were only permitted to leave the prison under guard when they were to be punished. The punishment meted upon its occupants was particularly severe, and in some cases can be considered to be bordering on cruel and unusual punishment. Blackwater Jail’s dark conditions and cruel punishments made it one of the most feared establishments of its time. In addition, it became a place of legend, and its name has become synonymous with prisons of the Victorian era. Though Blackwater Jail is now defunct and forgotten, it is still remembered as a place of horror and suffering. Captured prisoners were known to have whispered tales of their experiences in the depths of the jail, and many of these accounts still linger in the stories and folklore of the local area.
